China Urges De-escalation Following Israel’s Airstrike on Iran

China has officially voiced its concern following an airstrike by Israel on Iran, an event that significantly heightened tensions between the two nations. During a press conference on Friday, Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Lin Jian emphasized the country’s stance against actions that could further escalate regional tensions. “China opposes any act that leads to further escalation of tensions and will continue to play a constructive role in de-escalating the situation,” Lin stated.

The airstrike occurred early Friday morning, around 4:00 a.m. local time, targeting areas near Isfahan, a central Iranian city. Concurrently, air defense systems were activated in the northwestern city of Tabriz, responding to what was described as “suspicious targets” by Major Gen. Abdolrahim Mousavi, Iran’s army chief. Mousavi confirmed that these measures resulted in no damage.

This strike follows a significant escalation last Sunday when Iran and its regional allies launched a coordinated attack involving over 300 missiles and drones against Israel. This attack, which was largely thwarted by Israeli, U.S., and regional air defenses, was in retaliation for an earlier airstrike this month that targeted an Iranian consulate in Damascus, resulting in the deaths of several officers from Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps.

Despite the severity of the recent airstrike, both Israel and Iran have maintained a cautious stance post-attack. Israel has not officially accepted responsibility for the strike, while Iran, which had previously promised a robust response to any Israeli aggression, has somewhat downplayed the significance of the incident.
