Quantum dots (QD) are semiconductor nanocrystals that have been utilized in current TVs and display devices under the marketing term QLED by brands like Samsung, TCL, and Hisense.

The True Potential of Quantum Dots:
The QD-LED technology represents a form where quantum dots take a central role in display performance. Current QD Mini LED TVs use a thin film of quantum dot nanoparticles that act similarly to color filters, producing purer colors and enhancing color saturation. This light conversion process also improves efficiency, leading to power savings.

QD-OLED, which uses OLED as a backlight source, employs quantum dots in a manner akin to filters in LCD TVs, meaning the quantum dots are not the light source themselves. While existing LCD or OLED TVs incorporate quantum dot technology, it has not yet fully realized its capabilities.

The Next Step in Display Evolution:
The goal for display manufacturers is to make quantum dots the light source directly. QD-LED or NanoLED, as it’s also known, is expected to offer a wider color gamut than current QD-OLED, along with brighter, more affordable, and more durable displays. Manufacturers aim to create QD-LED displays that can cover 100% of the BT2020 color space, although durability remains a topic of discussion.

This theoretically provides superior image quality, almost eliminating the shortcomings of previous technologies. Using quantum dots instead of traditional color filters allows for nearly all the energy used to create light on a TV to be directed to the viewer’s eyes. Quantum dots can almost perfectly convert blue light into red and green, resulting in highly efficient displays that are both brighter and consume less power.

Direct Emission with Quantum Dots:
QD-LED, as a direct emission technology, involves applying a small voltage to quantum dot pixels to produce light. When engineers combine enough pixels and devise a method to address them all, an image is formed. This bears similarities to plasma technology, and QD-LED is indeed a pixel self-emissive technology with similarities to plasma, OLED, and Micro LED in some aspects.

Manufacturers and Quantum Dot Suppliers:
Many companies are researching QD-LED technology, but the manufacturing and supply of quantum dots hold core to its development. Regardless of who utilizes the technology, the raw materials must be procured rather than produced in-house.

According to Nanosys, a leading quantum dot manufacturer, there is no significant difference between the overall composition of photoluminescent quantum dots and electroluminescent quantum dots, although they are not entirely interchangeable.

Challenges and Manufacturing Methods:
The biggest challenge for QD-LED is not the quantum dots themselves but the technologies surrounding them, such as providing the right amount of electricity at the right time to ensure optimal image quality.

Several companies are experimenting with different manufacturing methods, including inkjet printing and photolithography. Both methods have potential advantages and disadvantages, but they are similar to the manufacturing processes of modern display devices.

TCL and Samsung at SID Display Week:
Both companies have adopted inkjet printing technology, likely for its cost-effectiveness and potential future use in various display fields, including QD-LED and OLED.

The Relationship Between QD-LED and LED:
While the principles of quantum dot self-emission may seem unrelated to LED technology, the practical application of QD-LED in devices is indeed connected. The future of QD-LED technology is expected to involve both organic and inorganic solutions.

Organic QD-LED:
Organic QD-LED, where TV or monitor pixels are composed of red, green, and blue quantum dots that emit light when electrified, is similar to OLED. This organic approach can be made extremely thin and light, and once the technology matures, costs could be lower due to the ease of manufacturing using inkjet printing.

However, the main drawback is lifespan; organic materials tend to degrade over time. Blue and green quantum dot lifespans are currently shorter than expected, and improving the brightness of quantum dot emission is another challenge.

Inorganic QD-LED:
The inorganic approach is fundamentally different, building upon Micro LED technology. By using blue LEDs and applying red and green quantum dots via inkjet printing, blue light is converted into other colors, maintaining pixel self-emission.

This solution’s advantage lies in its lifespan and the reduced difficulty of the Micro LED mass transfer process. However, this inorganic approach is still in the early stages, with Samsung leading its development.

Manufacturer Insights:
In discussions with panel manufacturers, both organic and inorganic approaches have been considered. The ultimate goal is to create QD-LED using inorganic materials to address the uncontrollable factors and lifespan issues associated with organic QD-LED.

While Samsung’s Micro LED is one inorganic approach to QD-LED, other manufacturers may have different ideas. However, if QD-LED TVs or monitors appear on the market in the coming years, they will likely be organic, with lifespans depending on improvements made by quantum dot manufacturers.
